What Breed of Dog is Right for Me?

Dogs are incredible animals to have as pets. We believe that no family is complete without a dog. However, there are so many different breeds, that choosing the right dog for you can be difficult. There are lots of things to consider, from the size of the dog, to the level of care and exercise that they require. Before making any decisions you should learn a little bit more about different breeds to ensure that you are making the right choice.

There are endless breeds and crossbreeds that you can choose from and so we couldn’t possibly talk about all of them in this blog. So, we have picked a few of our favourite popular breeds to tell you a little bit more about them and their personalities along with the type of care they require.

Labrador

Labradors are a very common household pet to have. This is due to their friendly and attentive nature. In fact labradors are so intelligent and obedient that they are one of the most common breeds to be trained as guide dogs. Labradors are especially great as a family dog. They are great with children and are incredibly loving as well as playful. Generally you will find labradors to be very gentle and laid back, however they do love to have a bit of attention anywhere they go!

The only issue with labradors is that you need to stay on top of their diet and ensure that you are exercising them regularly. Quite often they will gain weight easily, which is why a lot of labradors become overweight and unhealthy. Therefore it is a big responsibility for you as their owner to keep them on a restricted diet with plenty of exercise in between.

German Shepherd

German Shepherds are gentle giants. They are a stunning breed of dog, with so many amazing qualities including intelligence. German Shepherds are the most common breed of dog to be trained and used in the police force, and this is due to their high level of intelligence, skill and obedience. Therefore, they are pretty easy to train and will do as you say. Furthermore, this makes them the perfect guard dog for your home!

Not only are German Shepherds very protective, but they are also full of energy and make a great companion. They are incredibly loyal and love to socialise with their family.

French Bulldog

If you are looking for a smaller dog, French Bulldogs are a great breed to go for. Though they can be quite territorial, they are full of energy and love socialising and playing. It has to be said that French Bulldogs may be more suited to families without children, due to their protectiveness and wariness in foreign circumstances. However, French Bulldogs are extremely sociable and enjoy being around people all of the time. They certainly love attention!

Cockapoo

Arguably one of the most common crossbreeds is the cockapoo. This beautiful dog is a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle. They are the perfect manageable size if you are looking for a dog that isn’t too big and that you can control easily. The great thing about crossbreeds is that they are the blend of two different breeds and therefore have the perfect mix of all the best qualities.

Cockapoos are very loyal with a fun-loving temperament. They love attention and spending time with their owners and are active so enjoy playing and exercising. One thing to be mindful of if you are considering getting a cockapoo is that they do require regular grooming in order to keep their coat clean and healthy. This can be done by yourself or you can take them to a dog groomer to stay on top of things.

Border Collie

Border Collies are an extremely high energy dog that thrives off lots of exercise and stimulation. They are incredibly loyal to their owner and are a true friend for life. They are extremely intelligent and so are easy to train as they learn commands very quickly and are obedient in following these commands. This is instinctive to them due to the fact they were bred to round up sheep.

If you are looking into getting a Border Collie, you must be prepared to exercise them regularly. Not only should you walk them twice a day, but you should also ensure that they are taken out on big runs so that they can really burn off some energy and exercise properly.

Jack Russell

Some people prefer smaller breeds of dogs, and one breed that is very popular is Jack Russells. They are easy to groom, love companionship, and are energetic and playful. Their high energy and natural instinctive desire to hunt can make them quite a handful, however they love to be stimulated and have a job to do.
